Lion’s Mane

Sawdust block should have primordial fruit bodies on the top of the block

Lion’s Mane does better in a large clear sides storage bin (20-30 qt)

  • Pick one of the 4 corners that has the largest fruit body forming and cut 1-2 inch horizontal slit at top corner

  • Roll top of bag down and compress all air out of top of bag

  • Place piece of packing tape across top of bag to keep it secured (stick it down onto the main part of the bag)

  • Put about 1 inch water in bottom of storage bin

  • Set bag directly in water make sure the cut is 4-5 inches away from the wall of the bin

  • Put lid on the storage bin ajar to allow some air exchange

  • Once mushroom starts to emerge out of hole in bag, mist the inside of the storage bin once a day

Be careful not to overwater the mushroom, it will cause it to rot

  • Once mushroom has grown out and spines have started to cascade downward it is time to harvest the mushroom

  • Grab the mushroom and wiggle gently back and forth until it releases from block, DO NOT cut the mushroom from the block as this may lead to contamination.

  • Expect the first flush 7-10 days from opening bag

  • Idea fruiting temperature is 60-70 F

  • Typically, expect at least 3 flushes (7-14 days apart)

If you don’t use a container it will likely not stay moist enough to fruit well

An alternative is to place plastic over the block in a way that the plastic doesn’t touch mushrooms, still needs misting 1-2 times a day

After use as grow kit the bag can be used a sawdust spawn within 60 days (for plugging logs)

Oysters (Pearl, Blue and Golden)

Oysters do better in a large clear sides storage bin (20-30 qt)

  • Cut three 1-2 inch horizontal slits on each side of the bag. Space out cuts, two at the top, another further down in the middle.

  • Roll top of bag down and compress all air out of top of bag

  • Place piece of packing tape across top of bag to keep it secured (stick it down onto the main part of the bag)

  • Put about 1 inch water in bottom of storage bin

  • Set bag directly in water make sure the cuts are 4-5 inches away from the wall of the bin

  • Put lid on the storage bin ajar to allow some air exchange

  • Once mushroom starts to emerge out of hole in bag, mist the inside of the storage bin once a day

Be careful not to overwater the mushroom, it will cause it to rot

  • Once mushroom has grown out and edge of caps are still slightly in-rolled it is time to harvest the mushroom

Chestnuts (also Shimofuri and King Trumpets)

Ideal fruiting temperature is 60-70 F

  • Place entire bag (without opening) in a clear storage bin (20-30 qts) until small fruit bodies start to form on the sides or top of the bag

  • When these are about 1 inch tall then cut around the bottom of the bag, leaving 1.5-2 inches of plastic at base, then cut vertically so you can peel the top of the bag off.

  • Most of the block will be exposed to fresh air at this point

  • Place about an inch of water in the storage bin put a brick or something comparable in the storage bin and place the grow kit on top of it (so it’s above the water)

  • Mist once a day until mushrooms are mature

  • After misting keep lid on, slightly ajar to allow for air exchange

  • Since most of block is exposed chestnuts will last about 3 flushes, about 10-14 days between flushes

  • After first harvest let the block stay dormant without misting for 3-4 days then start misting again they will often produce mushrooms faster
